Situation

Before Construction was finished on the Navy Pier Mariana next to Chicago’s iconic Navy Pier, they reached out to Sure-Foot for anti-slip tape capable of keeping boaters and pedestrians safe while navigating the pier’s wet and slippery surfaces. Since the Navy Pier Marina would start accepting reservations for slips in the Spring of 2025 for visiting boaters, they wanted to create a welcoming environment with access to restrooms, laundry facilities, and showers that were aesthetically pleasing and felt permanent. As part of their efforts, the Navy Pier Marina came to Sure-Foot looking for a cost-effective anti-slip solution that would not require seasonal replacement.

Solution

Initially, the Navy Pier Marina considered a semi-permanent solution. We introduced a new patent-pending, permanent, weather-resistant custom embedding product that would be able to weather Chicago’s hottest summers and coldest winters. That’s because our FRP products are made of color-fast material that maintains its long-lasting color all year long, even in the face of harsh weather conditions.

The best part? Navy Pier Marina was able to embed our anti-slip tapered deck strips with custom messages in a complementary color of their choosing. This helped them display messages without the use of extra signage while adding safe and durable anti-slip protection designed to handle the large amount of foot traffic the Navy Pier receives daily.

The anti-slip deck strips heading directly to each boat feature the text, “NO PUBLIC ACCESS  – BOATERS ONLY,” to help keep visitors on course.

Results & Analysis

After comparing Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) anti-slip tapes against FRP custom embedding, the customization and longevity provided by our anti-slip treads made the decision easy, offering lower maintenance and a higher coefficient of friction with the customer message embedded into the Deck strip.
